ACTAEA - Actae'a

Description of actaea

These hardy perennials, known as Baneberries, are found wild in woodlands of eastern North America, Asia and Europe. They are compact, clump forming plants that grow up to 3 feet high and wide. Their green leaves are lobed, serrated and have long stalks. In early summer, small, white flowers are produced in fluffy, globular heads atop thin stems. These are followed by poisonous, round berries that may be white, red, or blue.

Potting of actaea

These plants thrive in moist, leafy, humus-rich soil in a shady or partially shady spot. They are good for shady borders or woodland gardens.

Propagation of actaea

Baneberries may be increased by sowing seeds in the fall or by division in the spring.

Varieties of actaea

Actaea rubra (Red Baneberry or Red Cohosh);
Actaea alba (White Baneberry or White Cohosh).
