BERBERIDOPSIS - Berberidop'sis

Description of berberidopsis

This group consists of one, evergreen shrub that is native to Chile. Berberidopsis corallina (Coral Plant) is a beautiful, medium-sized plant with climbing stems. The leathery, green leaves are edged with spiny teeth. In late summer, dark crimson flowers are produced singly on thin stalks or in pendant clusters.

Potting of berberidopsis

Coral Plants may be grown outdoors in mild climates or in greenhouses. These plants should be grown in moist, sandy, loamy, acid or neutral soil, in a shady, sheltered location. In the early spring or late winter, the tips of the branches may be pruned back a bit. Severe pruning isn't necessary.

Propagation of berberidopsis

Cuttings may be set in a cold frame in the summer. Keep the frame closed and shaded until roots have formed. The branches may be layered in September, or seeds may be sown, when they are ripe, in a 50-degree temperature in the spring.
