BRUCKENTHALIA - Bruckenthal'ia

Description of bruckenthalia

This group consists of only one, evergreen bush that is native to southeastern Europe and Asia Minor. Bruckenthalia spiculifolia, Spike Heath, is a dwarf, heath-like plant that grows up to 10 inches high. This dwarf shrub is suitable for growing in rock gardens and borders. It has dark green foliage and produces terminal clusters of rose-pink, bell-shaped flowers, in early summer.

Potting of bruckenthalia

The Spike Heath grows best in sandy peat, though it will live in lime-free, sandy loam.

Propagation of bruckenthalia

The plants may be lifted and divided, in the spring. Seeds may be sown in a greenhouse having a 50º F temperature on the surface of sifted sandy peat. Keep them in shade until they have sprouted. Cuttings may also be made from 1/2- to 3/4-inch shoots. If this is done in August, they are inserted in sandy peat under a hand light or in a frame; if this is done in October, they should be placed in sandy peat in a greenhouse.

Varieties of bruckenthalia
