BUPLEURUM - Bupleu'rum

Description of bupleurum

This group consists of about seventy-five annuals, perennials or shrubs found wild in Europe, North America, Asia, and North Africa. Bupleurum fruticosum, however, is the only one normally cultivated. Bupleurum fruticosum, commonly known as Hare's Ear, is an evergreen, medium-sized shrub that is suitable for growing near the sea. Hare's Ear grows 5 to 6 feet high and has grayish-green leaves. From early to late summer, clusters of tiny, yellow flowers are borne. This shrub is mainly grown for its attractive foliage.

Potting of bupleurum

Hare's Ear can be grown in all kinds of soil, in climates that are mild. In the spring, this shrub should be pruned back by about two-thirds.

Propagation of bupleurum

Cuttings may be taken in July and inserted in a cold frame or covered with a bell jar or hand light. When rooted, the cuttings are potted individually in small pots, kept in a cold frame during the winter and planted outside in the spring.
