CENTRANTHUS - Centran'thus

Description of centranthus

Centranthus is a group of hardy annuals and perennials native of Europe, and North Africa to Turkey. These plants are commonly known as Valerian. Centranthus ruber, the Red Valerian, forms loose clumps of blue-green, lance- or oval-shaped leaves. Its small, star-shaped, dark red-pink flowers are borne in heads above the leaves from late spring to fall. This plant grows from 2 to 3 feet high.

Potting of centranthus

Valerian should be placed in full sun, in soil that is well-drained. These plants will live in exposed places, in poor, especially alkaline soil, and in gardens by the ocean.

Propagation of centranthus

Seeds may be sown in the fall or spring.

Varieties of centranthus

Centranthus ruber;
Centranthus coccineus;
Centranthus alba;
Centranthus macrosiphon.
