EXOCHORDA - Exochor'da

Description of exochorda

This group consists of a few very beautiful, hardy, deciduous shrubs native of north and central Asia. In late spring, their slender branches are clothed with large, snow-white flowers. These shrubs are commonly known as Pearl Bushes. Exochorda racemosa (Common Pearlbush) is a large, spreading shrub with oblong, bluish-green leaves. In late spring, erect clusters of white flowers are produced. Exochorda macrantha 'The Bride' is a small to medium-size, compact shrub that has a "weeping" habit of growth. Its arching branches are clothed with large, white flowers in mid- or late spring. Exochorda korolkowii is an attractive variety that grows up to 15 feet high. It is suitable for growing in alkaline soil.

Potting of exochorda

Pearlbushes should be grown in full sun. They will grow in almost any garden soil, but prefer one that is on the acidic side. They tend to become chlorotic in very shallow, alkaline soil. After flowering, remove any weak stems and thin overcrowded ones.

Propagation of exochorda

Cuttings can be made from young shoots, 3 to 5 inches long. They will readily root in a propagating frame in July or August. Seeds can be sown under glass as soon as they are ripe. Suckers can sometimes be detached from older plants in the fall.

Varieties of exochorda

Exochorda giraldii var. wilsonii (Wilson Pearlbush);
Exochorda korolkowii;
Exochorda macrantha 'The Bride';
Exochorda racemosa (Common Pearlbush).
